Roof Restoration at The Lodge, Earl Stonham
The Lodge in Earl Stonham, a Grade II listed property, tragically burned down in June 2023.
We were honoured to be entrusted by Oakpark Properties, a local building company we work closely with, to reinstate the roof and help restore the building to its former glory.
Step-by-Step Process
View the steps that the Turner Roofing Specialists team took from start to finish on this project.
1. Timber Roof Construction
Oakpark Properties expertly constructed an entirely new timber roof on-site, ensuring it remained in keeping with the original structure.
2. Insulation & Roof Preparation
We installed 150mm rigid insulation, providing excellent thermal performance before fitting a breather membrane to allow ventilation and moisture control. Gold-grade 50x25mm battens were then installed to support the slate roofing.
The client chose SSQ Del Prado 300x600mm natural Spanish slates, which we installed using 30mm copper clout nails for long-term durability and an authentic appearance suitable for the historic property.
4. Chimney Restoration & Leadwork
- Oakpark Properties meticulously rebuilt the chimneys to match the original design.
- We installed Code 4 lead flashings around the chimneys for a secure, watertight seal.
- Code 5 lead was used to fabricate and install box gullies and back gutters on the chimneys to ensure proper drainage.
- All hips and ridges were completed with a Code 5 lead wood core roll detail, providing both durability and a traditional aesthetic.
- The newly constructed dormers at the rear of the property were clad in Code 5 lead, and we installed a fully vented lead flat roof system to ensure longevity and effective water management.
- To protect and enhance the leadwork, a coat of patination oil was applied, preventing oxidation and ensuring a clean, professional finish.
Restoring this historic property was a privilege for our team, and we took great pride in delivering a roof built to stand the test of time.
The finished result seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with modern durability, ensuring that the Lodge has a secure and authentic roof for generations to come.
